Welcome to AAI's monthly Innovations, where we share with you the best practices in simulation engineering through case studies and industry experience. In this month's issue, we focus on how simulation has helped a leading faucet manufacturer validate proposed changes to their production line.

Simulation Validates Changes and Enhancements to a Dynamic Production Line

Moen Incorporated is the number one brand of faucet in North America. As well as a major supplier of stylish kitchen sinks and innovative bath accessories, Moen has introduced a wide range of consumer-preferred, stylish products – positioning Moen as the number one plumbing brand, both in market share and in the minds of consumers. In 2003, Moen’s stainless steel sink facility began adopting lean manufacturing principals to its operations and saw the need to apply this process to its newest production line, “Silver Streak.”

Moen recognized the need for a dynamic predictor tool to validate the expected capability of the Silver Streak line. Moen decided the best methodology for this validation was simulation. As a result, Moen contracted Automation Associates Inc. (AAI) to create a simulation model that would represent the Silver Streak production line and serve as a tool to both validate and optimize the operations. The simulation model would include all operations in the production line, from the processing of raw stock to packaging.

AAI’s simulation model successfully validated the feasibility of the Silver Streak and was able to identify areas of improvement in the production line and other critical areas that had been previously overlooked. Company decision makers have taken ownership of the customized simulation model and continue to execute additional scenarios to improve the dynamic operations of their production line.
